Play to Team Strengths

August 9th, 2007 · No Comments

Yesterday, I wrote the 7 Steps to Lead Without Inherent Talent.  Today, I want to build on the third step - delegating.

 Leadership quote from Wesley Granberg-Michaelson:
“My goal is not to be a ‘well-rounded’ leader, but rather to focus on the unique gifts that I can bring, and then make certain that the strengths of others bring all that is necessary - including the things that I lack - to our work.”

Delegatingis a difficult skill set to master in my opinion.  You absolutely do not want to shirk your responsibilities by tasking your job to subordinates.  You want to maximize the effectiveness of the team by allowing team members to contribute their strengths.  You can provide them with opportunities to take on additional responsibility to grow, develop, and gain experience and that is, in my view, the best way to delegate.

Tomorrow, I am going to take this on another twist.
